Tips on Preventing Hard Drive Failure It’s not difficult to understand why computer hard drive failures are such painful experiences—the chance of losing all your important work, your personal files, your painstakingly-downloaded music and movies and all the inconvenience of the disruptions and attempts needed to retrieve your data trail… and the list goes on. As far as your computer goes, it’s probably the most important equipment in your computer, with every other equipment easily replaceable. So what can we do to prevent the agony that comes along with a faulty hard drive? Here are some small efforts that can greatly reduce the chances of hard drive failures Shut down your computer regularly. A simple dogma but one that many fail to comply with. By shutting down your computer regularly, you avoid unnecessary wear and tear that comes with constant and continual operation. On the other hand, don’t shut down your computer every chance you may get to leave it idle—powering up your computer after shutting down is believed to cause more stress on the drive that prolonged and continuous use. Shutting down your computer properly is just as important, as a sudden shutdown can corrupt the data stored in the drive.
Do not move your computer when it’s switched on Perform regular disk cleanups and delete corrupted files Do not place your computer near a heat source Hard drives, or any computer equipment, are ultra sensitive to heat. Even the smallest amount of heat may cause the delicate electronics of the hard drive to malfunction. In this case, it also helps if you make sure your computer fan is working optimally to prevent overheating due to the large amount of heat it generates while operating.
While prevention is better than cure, it never hurts to make plans for an unexpected rainy day. Copy and back-up your files regularly to ensure that, if the day comes where your hard-drive fails on you, it’s only a matter of replacing it with a newer, better one.
